Announcement of a University Professorship for
Geomatics
A professorship for geomatics is to be filled at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) from May 1, 2025. The position will be filled in the form of a permanent contractual employment relationship in accordance with Section 98 of the University Act 2002.

The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, the Alma Mater Viridis, is the university of sustainability and life. We are looking for a highly qualified and professionally experienced person for the Institute of Geomatics within the new Department of Ecosystem Management, Climate and Biodiversity (from January 1, 2025). The position includes teaching and research in all major areas of remote sensing and spatial levels of observation, with a particular focus on the collection and analysis of remote sensing data for the study and monitoring of ecosystems, climate and land use changes. The applicant should demonstrate excellence in remote sensing methods and be willing to serve as head of the Institute of Geomatics. The applicant has an inter- and transdisciplinary research profile. The successful candidate represents the scientific field of geomatics in research, teaching and third mission.

In research-led teaching, participation in compulsory and elective courses in the Bachelor's and Master's programs in Agricultural Science, Forestry, Environmental and Bioresource Management, Landscape Planning and Landscape Architecture and Environmental Engineering at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna is required, including the supervision of corresponding theses. Teaching in Bachelor's programs is a mandatory requirement. Attendance at the university is expected.

An important part of this professorship is committed, collegial cooperation in academic self-administration and management.

The successful applicant has excellent specialist knowledge in both teaching and research in areas of remote sensing that are related to BOKU's research priorities.

The main tasks include the acquisition of third-party funding through grants and cooperation projects, the promotion of inter- and transdisciplinary research, the publication of research results in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at leading conferences, teaching in bachelor's, master's and doctoral courses in the field of remote sensing, supervision of master's theses, dissertations and habilitations as well as active participation in the life of the university, the department and the institute.

Requirements profile:

  • A relevant teaching qualification (venia docendi) acquired at an Austrian university or an equivalent international qualification or an academic qualification equivalent to a university teaching qualification.
  • Relevant experience and ability in teaching, providing guidance in scientific work and supervising young researchers.
  • Relevant research experience, national and international reputation and ability to network.
  • Excellent publication activity in the field.
  • Profound international research experience.
  • Courses are held in German and English.
  • Experience in the successful acquisition, execution and management of research projects.
  • Collaboration with national and international research institutions as well as with relevant partners from public administration and business.
  • Management and personnel management skills including skills in the areas of gender and diversity management, inclusion and accessibility in communication; communication and teamwork skills.
  • Participation in public relations work.
  • Participation in relevant priority and cooperation programs of the university.
  • Participation in the self-administration of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna.
  • Excellent written and spoken German and English skills or the willingness to learn German in the first two years.
